Kolkata, Dec 13 — The West Bengal cabinet Thursday cleared the proposal to allot a 15-acre plot of land to ITC Infotech, which has been waiting for several years to set up its first campus in the state.

"The cabinet has taken a decision on ITC Infotech's 15 acres of land in Rajarhat," state Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee told media persons after the cabinet meeting here.

He said the cabinet also cleared proposal for 14 more projects in the state, but declined to divulge details of these industrial projects.

The cabinet nod came just two days after cigarette-to-hotel conglomerate ITC Ltd. chairman Y.C. Deveshwar called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat.

In the half-hour meeting on Tuesday, Banerjee had "assured" Deveshwar that she would "look into the matter" of ITC Infotech's Bengal project.

According to official sources, the firm, a fully owned IT subsidiary of the diversified conglomerate, was awaiting for the Banerjee government to allot the land in the satellite township of Rajarhat, on the north-eastern fringes of the city.

The company had approached the then Left Front government in 2005 to get around 15 acres for setting up its facilities. The state government had even earmarked 5 acres in Rajarhat.

However, days after the allotment, the then government backtracked and cancelled its decision to hand over the plot to ITC.
