Moscow urges 'risk minimization' ahead of Afghan pullout

Dec 19 2012, 2:18pm CST | by

Moscow, Dec 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed an action programme be worked out to minimise possible risks involved in the upcoming reduction of the international military presence in Afghanistan.

Moscow, Dec 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed an action programme be worked out to minimise possible risks involved in the upcoming reduction of the international military presence in Afghanistan.

"It is important to remember that elections are to take place in Afghanistan (later) this year, which is bound to ratchet up tension. We need to take all of that into account in our work," Putin told a session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Council.

"An effective algorithm of practical action should be developed to minimize possible risks for our countries."

The CSTO's current members are Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Putin also stressed the need to expand the CSTO states' capability for collective response to emergency situations.

He praised the increasing level of cooperation and foreign policy coordination within the CSTO framework.

"This year more than 15 joint statements have been made on topical issues of the international agenda," the Russian president said.

The organization's goal is to put in place an effective partnership network to counter regional and international security threats, he said.

This Russian Official’s Homophobic Comment Is A Reminder Of Why Tim Cook Is The Only Gay Fortune 500 CEO (AAPL)

Oct 30 2014 1:57pm CDT | Source: Business Insider

After Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly acknowledged his sexuality for the first time on Thursday, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, Vitaly Milonov, had this to say: “What could he (Cook) bring us? The Ebola virus, AIDS, gonorrhea? They all have unseemly ties over there…Ban him for life.” Obviously, one Russian official’s insensitive comment does not represent the whole country’s view. But it’s worth noting that this type of homophobi ...

A Newly Declassified CIA Paper Details A Tense Subplot In The Cold War Arms Race

Oct 23 2014 5:34pm CDT | Source: Business Insider

It's one of the great paradoxes of nuclear power politics. Strategic missile defense was meant to make inter-continental nuclear warfare obsolete, creating a protective shield that negates an enemy's first strike advantage. The idea is that one side won't even bother launching nukes if they know their missiles can be shot out of the sky en-masse. And the deadly logic of nuclear warf ...
