Kerry reaffirms commitment to US-India strategic dialogue

Feb 6 2013, 11:22pm CST | by

Washington, Feb 7 (IANS) The new US Secretary of State John Kerry and the Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid have expressed their commitment to continuing and strengthening the US-India strategic dialogue mechanism.

Washington, Feb 7 — The new US Secretary of State John Kerry and the Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid have expressed their commitment to continuing and strengthening the US-India strategic dialogue mechanism.

In a phone call Tuesday with Khurshid, the two underscored the vital importance of the US-Indian relationship, "and cooperating closely not only on bilateral issues but on regional issues and on global issues that we work on together", State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Wednesday.

"They also both expressed their commitment to continuing and strengthening the US-India Strategic Dialogue mechanism," she said noting that this has become the regular mechanism of bringing officials across the two governments together every year.

Launched in 2010 by then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then external affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, it is the highest-level, regularly scheduled bilateral exchange between the two counties. The third dialogue in the series was held last June 13 in Washington.

Kerry, Nuland said also thanked Khurshid for India's continued assistance to Afghanistan and affirmed the US desire to continue collaborating with India on regional issues.

Asked if Kerry would be travelling to New Delhi for the next round of India-US Strategic Dialogue scheduled for June, the spokesperson said she didn't have any travel plans for now but "obviously, there will be a good relationship, they'll see each other".

"I cannot imagine that during the time he's Secretary of State, he will never go to India. I think we will figure it out," Nuland said.

Denmark tries a soft-handed approach to returned Islamist fighters, sending them to therapy, not jail

Oct 20 2014 12:38pm CDT | Source: National Post

AARHUS, Denmark — The rush of morning shoppers parted to make way for Talha, a lanky 21-year-old in desert camouflage and a long, religious beard. He strode through the local mall with a fighter’s gait picked up on the battlefields of Syria. Streams of young Muslim men greeted him like a returning king. As-salamu alaykum. Wa alaikum assalaam. In other countries, Talha — one of hundreds of young jihadists from the West who has fought in Syria ...

Right-wing Israeli MPs accuse John Kerry of ‘blaming Jews’ for ‘strengthening’ ISIS

Oct 19 2014 8:30pm CDT | Source: National Post

John Kerry, the U.S. secretary of state, has been strongly criticized for seeming to blame Israel for the recruitment of young Muslims by ISIS. Mr. Kerry caused anger among right-wing MPs when he suggested that a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians would help the campaign to defeat the jihadists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS). “As I went around and met with people in the course of our discussions about the [anti-ISIS] coalition… there wasn’t a ...

Indonesia’s incoming president gets boost after meeting rival, but tough challenges await

Oct 18 2014 1:03am CDT | Source: Canadian Business Online

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Rebooting a slowing economy in a nation of 250 million where inequality is rising, a looming decision on raising fuel prices and vulnerability to any U.S. interest rate hikes would be enough to tax any incoming president. But Indonesia’s Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who takes office Monday, must also find a way to work with a powerful and well-funded opposition that could block moves to address the challenges holding back the country’s rise as an ...

Oct 14 2014 5:27pm CDT | Source: Business Insider

The US and Turkey, the Middle East's only NATO member state, are at a frustrating point in their relationship. The Syrian city of Kobane, which is on the Turkish border, is in danger of falling to ISIS. Turkey has lined up tanks on its border, but isn't sending in troops and is actively impeding Kurdish militants looking to reinforce the town. The US is bombing ISIS outside of Kobane, but the overwhelming likelihood is that neither side's actions are meetin ...
