North Korea to offer mobile internet access to foreigners

Feb 23 2013, 2:21am CST | by

Pyongyang, Feb 23 (IANS) Foreigners who live in North Korea will soon be allowed access to mobile internet starting Monday, a technician told Xinhua Saturday.

Pyongyang, Feb 23 — Foreigners who live in North Korea will soon be allowed access to mobile internet starting Monday, a technician told Xinhua Saturday.

"You will be able to tweet, Skype and surf the internet from your own cellphones, iPads and other mobile devices as soon as you register at the Korean Communication Center," said an unnamed technician from the Korean-Egyptian joint venture company Koryolink.

"We will provide both a USB modem and your SIM card to get access to Internet. (It) costs 75 euro and 150 euro upon registration, with different levels of charge standard, from 400 euro/10G, 250 euro/5G, to 150 euro/2G for USB and 10 euro for SIM card per month," he said.

"We have tried more than one year to negotiate with the Korean side, and got the approval recently," said the technician.

However, North Korean citizens will still not have access to the mobile internet service or make international calls.

The announcement came one month after North Korea began allowing foreigners to bring their own cellphones into the country to purchase Koryolink-made SIM cards, at the airport or at Koryolink shops for 50 euros ($70).

Calls abroad range from 0.38 euros a minute to Switzerland and France, and more than 5 euros a minute to the US. Calls to South Korea still remain prohibited.

"Since the number of foreign residents here are limited, we will try to get more permission from the Korean security side to launch more services for short time tourists coming here for travel," he said.

Though the charge is comparatively expensive, we are excited about the relaxation of controls on communication, said a Nepalese resident who added that it will be more convenient for them to work in the country.

There are 1.8 million North Koreans using 3G cellphones across the country. However, North Koreans and foreigners can not make calls to each other.

Microsoft helps Royal Caribbean become the ultimate cruise line for nerds

Aug 25 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: BetaNews

Cruising is something that is near and dear to my heart. As someone who grew up very poor, my family never went on vacation -- it was a waste of money. This was the mindset that I was raised to have, thinking travel was stupid, when money can go towards bills. This thinking was dangerous though, as I became an adult that almost never left New York. It's a cliche, but life is short, and it is silly not to see the world. What broke this frugal ...

Recruiting Data Scientists to Do Social Good

Aug 25 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Harvard Business Review

We know that data scientists are a hot commodity. Businesses can’t get enough of them. That’s great for tech companies that attract talent with stock and benefits, but less so for social initiatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who could use their talent too. Short of asking nonprofits to drain their coffers to make expensive hires, can we find a way to staff their projects? I think so, if we can create a better mechanism to con ...

Microsoft makes Surface 2 more attractive

Aug 25 2014 4:31am CDT | Source: BetaNews

With Microsoft focusing its attention on the bigger, newer and more expensive Surface Pro 3, it is easy to lose sight of its second flagship tablet on sale, Surface 2. It may not run Windows 8.1 Pro or tote a PC-grade processor, like Surface Pro 3, but it is nonetheless an interesting option for folks who wish to join the Windows RT 8.1 camp. Unlike most other tablets out there, its build quality is solid, is designed wit ...

Once a fantasy from a galaxy far, far away, holograms are finally nearing reality

Aug 20 2014 7:14am CDT | Source: BetaNews

The original Star Wars movies are packed with iconic scenes and futuristic technology, such as the moment when R2-D2 projects a hologram recording of Princess Leia into thin air for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Forget FaceTime and Skype, this is how we should be communicating with each other in the 21st century. A little over three decades after Star Wars first hit the cinemas, hologram technology is slowly beginning to edge its way from the realms of science fictio ...

EarlyClaim reserves usernames so you don’t end up with a crappy handle

Aug 17 2014 3:57am CDT | Source: BetaNews

You never know when the next Twitter is going to crop up. When a new service like Pinterest, Vine, or Skype appears, if you're not quick off the mark there's a high chance you'll miss out on your preferred username. You want MarkWilsonWords? Sorry, that went ages ago… you'll have to settle for MarkWilsonWord09868. Getting stuck with a crappy username sucks, but it's very hard to monitor all of the new services that pop up so you can bag your ideal name as ...

5 Things To Do Before You Invest In New York City Real Estate

Aug 12 2014 9:58am CDT | Source: Business Insider

New York City is one of the most stable real estate markets in the world because it is both highly transparent and under-leveraged. As a result, it's a hot location for people looking to invest in property who don't necessarily plan to live there. “Everyone has access to the same inventory,” Wei Min Tan, a Manhattan condominium buyer's broker for real estate firm Rutenberg Realty NY, explained to Business Insider. “In a lot of countries the mar ...
