BRICS members need to boost coordination: China

Sep 5 2013, 10:12pm CDT | by IANS

St. Petersburg, Sep 6 (IANS) Chinese President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that BRICS members should expand consensus on major international issues and enhance solidarity and cooperation.

St. Petersburg, Sep 6 — Chinese President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that BRICS members should expand consensus on major international issues and enhance solidarity and cooperation.

He made the remarks at an informal leaders' meeting of the BRICS group, which also includes Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa, before a Group of 20 (G20) Summit in this Russian city.

Under current circumstances, the Chinese president said, BRICS nations should jointly tackle the spill-over effect of the developed economies' loose monetary policy.

He urged developed nations to carry out effective structural reforms, and seriously consider the timing, steps and patterns of withdrawing their quantitative easing measures.

China, he added, has confidence in the emerging market economies.

BRICS members should join hands to maintain and promote the openness of the world economy, oppose trade protectionism, safeguard the multilateral trade system, and advance the Doha Round of trade talks, he said.

The five countries, Xi suggested, should also work together to obtain a bigger say for developing countries in global economic governance and push forward the quota reforms of the International Monetary Fund.

Additionally, they need to speed up the efforts to set up a BRICS development bank and an emergency foreign currency reserve so as to establish a BRICS financial safety net, he added.

Other participating leaders, Including India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, noted that the world economy now still faces risks and challenges and its recovery remains fragile.

They urged the world's major economies, including G20 members, to step up coordination over their macro-economic policies and join hands to promote a strong, sustainable and balanced global economic growth.

Earlier, Chinese Deputy Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao said BRICS countries have agreed on a joint foreign currency reserve pool of $100 billion.

The move came as a follow-up after the five countries agreed during this year's BRICS summit in Durban, South Africa, to set up a joint development bank.

China May Have Committed A Tiananmen Square-Scale Massacre This Year — And Totally Covered It Up

Oct 8 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Business Insider

Many feared that the recent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong would end with a crackdown reminiscent of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, when the Chinese army crushed a peaceful student occupation of central Beijing and killed hundreds or even thousands of people in the process. This speculation, and the global attention to Hong Kong, ignores a crucial piece of context: The Chinese government already killed scores of demonstrators in a single incident earli ...

Hong Kong protesters threaten to storm government buildings if leader doesn’t quit by Thursday

Oct 1 2014 10:24am CDT | Source: National Post

HONG KONG — Student leaders of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests warned that if the territory’s top official doesn’t resign by Thursday they will step up their actions, including occupying several important government buildings. By raising the stakes in the standoff, the protesters are risking another round of confrontation with police, who are unlikely to allow government buildings to be stormed. It also puts pressure on the Chinese government, which so far has said little beyond declari ...

Understanding China’s Hard Line on Hong Kong

Oct 1 2014 8:38am CDT | Source: Harvard Business Review

When Chinese students first took to the streets of Beijing in April 1989 — initially to mourn the death of reformist former Premier Hu Yaobang, then to protest for more democracy — nobody in the Chinese leadership seems to have been planning for it end with tanks rolling into Tiananmen Square. As Ezra P. Vogel tells it in his painfully long but hugely informative biography Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China — which I read on trains and planes and in hotel ...

Hong Kong Protesters Are Furious About A 30-Year-Old Broken Promise
