Noting that the aging population will likely have an a greater impact on the real estate market than any other factor for the remainder of this decade, Buckelew observed that, “first-time home buyers are frequently covered in the media and sought after by real estate agents, but it’s extremely rare that last-time home sellers are singled out as a segment with specialized needs. Professionals such as those graduating from our certification courses clearly understand that it’s time to shift outdated industry dynamics and embrace a new market approach,” Buckelew observed.

Citing a 2010 U.S. Census Bureau Report, Buckelew noted that between 2000 and 2010, there was a 15.1 percent increase in the 65-and-over segment of the population. At the same time, there was a 31.5 percent increase in the 45 to 64 year old segment – Baby Boomers who represent the largest demographic block in the history of the United States are entering retirement age at a rate of 10,000 a day. At the other end of the senior adult spectrum, U.S. Census Bureau data indicate that the 90-and-older segment of the population nearly tripled over the past three decades and is expected to quadruple over the next 40 years.
Statistics such as these, point to millions and millions of seniors who will be selling their homes: an estimated 11.3 million throughout the current decade, and that number is expected to reach 15 million between 2020 and 2030.
