Florida Company Launches a Revolution in College Tuition

Dec 3 2013, 10:44am CST | by PR.com

Dr. Richard Bishirjian, president of EDUcourses, an Internet-based higher education company based in Gainesville, Florida, announced today plans to offer a two-year college education that costs less than $999.

Gainesville, FL, December 03, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Richard Bishirjian, president of EDUcourses, an Internet-based higher education company based in Gainesville, Florida, announced today the launch of a new initiative to develop college-level courses that will challenge how colleges and universities price their tuition.

“Massive open online courses, or MOOCs, are the latest development in Internet-based course-delivery technology will make a college-level education available to anyone at prices far below the typical range of tuition of $400 to $3,000 per course,” Bishirjian said. “This truly will be a revolution in education. The opportunity to earn a two-year college education for a total cost of less than $999 hasn't existed since the 1960s.”

EDUcourses, Bishirjian said, will offer high-quality college-level MOOCs on a not-for-credit basis in 2014. Prices will start at $29.95 for some courses. A list of courses to be offered in 2014 may be accessed at the company's website: www.educourses.net

"The following list of tuition costs for 3-credit courses at Texas colleges and universities is representative of why a college education costs too much," Dr. Bishirjian said.

University of Houston-Downtown, $444; Sam Houston State, $747; University of Dallas, $1,125; University of Houston, $1,491; University of Texas-Dallas, $2,048; University of Texas-Austin, $2,059; Dallas Baptist, $2,100; Houston Baptist, $2,415; University of Texas-Arlington, $3,072; and Texas Christian, $3,240.

Bishirjian, an education entrepreneur who earned a Ph.D. in government and international studies from the University of Notre Dame, said EDUcourses and hundreds of other MOOC providers can release market forces to disrupt how college tuition is currently priced. "MOOCs have the potential," Bishirjian said, "to harness market forces to bring competition to what, until now, was a successful higher education cartel protected by state and federal regulations."
