Jury Says Samsung Infringed On Apple's Patents

May 3 2014, 12:49am CDT | by

Samsung must pay Apple $119.6 million in damages after a federal jury in California determined that the South Korean company had infringed on at least one of Apple’s patents relating to smartphone software features. But a decision to also award minimal damages to Samsung means that despite technically winning the suit, Apple may have lost some credibility in its ongoing claims of deeming Samsung a copycat.

The award is significantly less than the $2.2 billion Apple had been seeking, or the $930 million that Samsung was ordered to pay Apple by a separate jury  in 2012. Samsung is still appealing that order, after the jury decided Samsung had copied Apple’s technology for older generation devices.

In this lawsuit, Apple accused Samsung of infringing on its patents to create its Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets.

But the outcome is “a major blow” because the jury awarded Apple only about 5.5% of what it was seeking according to patent litigation expert Florian Mueller, whose FOSS Patents blog closely follows the legal spats between Apple and Samsung.

Mueller says Apple has now suffered a loss of credibility after the jury also decided that the Cupertino-based company had infringed on one of Samsung’s patents, and ordered Apple to pay damages of $158,000. “This outcome is a very good one for Samsung,” he says.

The jury was made up of four women and two men, and had deliberated their decision over two full days on Wednesday and Thursday according to press reports.

The iPhone maker claims that Samsung copied Apple’s technology for smartphone features including the slide-feature to unlock a device, word correction, universal searching, quick links and syncing programs in the background.

Samsung in turn has argued that Apple should pay $6 million for infringing on its own patents for video features on smartphones.
